Freud/Lacan Seminar Series

This series of seminars is an introduction to Freud through selected readings over the course of his prolific career.  We will cover basic
Freudian concepts such as the importance of unconscious mental life, free association, the meanings of dreams, symptoms, and slips
of the tongue, narcissism, unconscious defenses, unconscious guilt, the topographical and the structural models of the mind, repetition
compulsion, infantile sexuality, and the Oedipus complex.  We will also pay attention to how Freud listened to his analysands and used
clinical material to form his theoretical ideas about the structure of the mind and how it develops, and explore his technical ways of
working with the patients.

Winter 2010 trimester:

The focus of the Winter 10 seminar meetings will be the character structures: neurosis, psychosis, and perversion.  Readings include:
Formulations on the Two Principles of  Mental Functioning, Negation, Psycho-analytic Notes on an Autobiographical Account of a
Case of Paranoia
(Shreber), and From the History of an Infantile Neurosis (Wolfman)

This seminar series serves as a comprehensive introduction to the theoretical writings and clinical approach of Jacques Lacan. While
its aim is to act as the possibility of a foundation for the formation of an analyst, it is structured so that any interested party will have the
opportunity to further their knowledge and understanding of Lacanian theory. Each class will focus on one aspect of the overall
approach, building on and further elaborating what has been said before. It is strongly recommended that attendees to these seminars
have available the following texts:

Lacan, J.
Ecrits: The first complete edition in English (2006) W.W. Norton & Company (B. Fink, Trans)
Lacan, J.
Four Fundamental Concepts of Psychoanalysis (1977) W.W. Norton & Company (Sheridan, trans.)
Lacan, J.

Andre, S. What Does A Woman Want? (S. Fairfield, trans) Other Press (1999)
